The Mindful Eating Exercise

Purpose of the mindful eating exercise was to experience the difference between mindful awareness and automatic pilot. We often eat automatically (and when watching TV, reading etc.) and don’t experience the textures, flavours, joy of eating.

Mindfulness means paying attention to the present moment. It’s not about sitting in meditation for hours on end but rather developing a mindful awareness in each moment. Meditation is about focusing your awareness rather than acting automatically without being conscious of your experience.

Intentionally bringing awareness to something in a different way to usual changes the nature of the experience. Paying mindful attention to an experience can reveal things we hadn’t seen before and can transform the experience itself. See how the mind makes rapid associations from sensory information.
