There are many ways to try to achieve this: through developing a meditation practice, trying to be mindful of all my actions and watching how I engage with the world. From not speaking cruel words to people, to listening with an open heart, to watching out for small vulnerable insects and to being tolerant of others views, and through aspiring to attain Buddhahood to really be able to benefit others this is a lifetimes practice.
Not only does this directly and indirectly help others it also brings a deep and tranquil sense of inner peace to the mind which in turn, I hope, makes me a nicer person to be around!!
